Apple has 90 days to allow app sideloading in Brazil
Apple has been instructed to permit alternative app stores on iOS in Brazil within 90 days, according to reports from Brazilian publication Valor International and 9to5Mac. This directive comes after Apple was compelled to allow third-party app stores on iOS in the EU under the Digital Markets Act. The judge who issued the recent ruling noted that Apple has previously complied with similar requirements in other countries without any significant impact or irreparable harm to its economic model, as reported by Valor. The investigation in Brazil into Apple's practices originated from a complaint filed by Mercado Livre in 2022. Last November, Brazil granted Apple a 20-day ultimatum to enable developers to offer alternative in-app payment methods and allow sideloading; however, this injunction was overturned in early December. Apple intends to challenge the decision, as per a machine translation of Valor’s article. In a statement to Valor, Apple emphasized its belief in vibrant and competitive markets that foster innovation, stating that they encounter competition in all sectors and regions of operation, with a primary focus on user trust. Apple has not yet responded to a request for comment from The Verge.
