NFC Forum simplifies certification for updated devices
The NFC Forum has recently made changes to its certification program to offer a more streamlined and cost-effective process for NFC device manufacturers to re-certify their products after performing an operating system update that does not impact the device’s NFC functionality. In the past, any OS update required the manufacturer to undergo re-certification by the NFC Forum. However, the organization has now revised its policies so that manufacturers only need to self-certify that the updated product does not include any NFC-related modifications. According to the NFC Forum, the latest addition to the NFC Forum Certification Program in v3.1 of the NFC Forum Certification Policy, known as the Inheritance by Operating System (OS) update, empowers device manufacturers to maintain their NFC Forum Certification on previously certified device hardware. This eliminates the need for re-certification when implementing OS updates that do not affect the NFC technology's functionality within the device, allowing NFC Forum Certification to remain valid for the product's entire lifecycle. The NFC Forum Certification process comprises two types of tests: Analog for Hardware and Digital for Software. When a device receives a software update in the field, only the software undergoes changes, while the Hardware, such as the antenna and tuning components, remains unchanged. With the introduction of v3.1 of the Certification Policy, Analog testing can now be inherited for the first time, acknowledging this distinction. If there are no alterations related to the NFC implementation, only the necessary administrative information needs to be completed without requiring the device to be sent to a test lab. Consequently, only essential tests are conducted at each stage of the certification process, with all other tests on unchanged software elements and all Analog hardware tests being inherited. This approach enables continuous refinement and updates to devices, ensuring they operate as intended and deliver an optimal user experience throughout their lifecycle. The NFC Forum strongly encourages device manufacturers to leverage this new process to maintain their NFC Forum Certification efficiently in terms of cost and time.
