Indonesia’s central bank has added support for NFC payments to the country’s QRIS national QR mobile payments platform.

The move follows the central bank of Brazil’s move last month to add NFC payments support to its national Pix payments system.

“QRIS Tap provides a fast, convenient, affordable, secure and reliable alternative payment method for the public, particularly to support public services and digital retail transactions,” Bank Indonesia says.

“QRIS Tap will be implemented gradually and, ultimately, used broadly across various transportation mode channels, public services and other merchants.

“At this initial stage, QRIS Tap can be used at several transportation locations, parking lots, hospitals, retail spaces and MSMEs, including Bundaran HI and Lebak Bulus MRT stations, Transjakarta (limited to Royaltrans), DAMRI (limited to JR Connexion Jabodetabek), parking merchants, and hospitals, including RSUD Tarakan, RSCM Kencana, and RSPAD Gatot Subroto Paviliun Kartika.

“During the next phase, QRIS Tap implementation will be expanded to all MRT stations, Transjakarta routes, Jakarta and Jabodebek LRT routes, DAMRI ticketing, KRL (Jabodetabek and Jogja – Solo routes), Teman Bus and other merchants.”

“QRIS Tap does not incur any fees for the user, with a 0% Merchant Discount Rate (MDR) for public services agencies (BLU) and public service obligations (PSO), and merchants in other categories subject to a Merchant Discount Rate in accordance with the current scheme,” the central bank adds.

“This is consistent with supporting the Government’s Asta Cita program to provide affordable transportation infrastructure for the community and to increase the use of QRIS Tap in the transportation sector.

“Moving forward, Bank Indonesia is firmly committed to collaborating in synergy with all stakeholders to expand QRIS Tap acceptance and develop sustainable payment system innovation line with the Indonesia Payment System Blueprint (BSPI) 2030.”
