Jim Jordan subpoena pushes YouTube to restore ‘free speech’ like Meta

Meta may have recently changed its content moderation policies in support of “free speech,” but numerous other major Big Tech companies exist, offering additional social media platforms for conservatives to share uncensored content. On Thursday, Rep. Jim Jordan issued a subpoena to Alphabet, the parent company of Google, requesting documents that reveal whether YouTube deleted content upon the Biden-Harris administration's request, alleging that they were actively participating in the government's censorship efforts. Despite longstanding claims by Republican hardliners that Big Tech platforms manipulate algorithms and content policies to suppress conservative voices, the opposition against these companies has intensified since 2021, particularly following Donald Trump’s removal from Twitter (now X) after January 6th. Since assuming the chairmanship of the House Judiciary Committee in 2023, Jordan has utilized his position and subpoena authority to investigate the data practices of Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Apple, and others, suspecting them of unfairly targeting conservative social media profiles at the direction of the Biden administration’s Department of Justice, resulting in unconstitutional censorship. Their endeavors have achieved some success, notably last May when the committee released a report alleging that Biden had pressured Meta into deleting content from its platforms. In a letter accompanying the Alphabet subpoena, Jordan highlighted Meta's acknowledgment of its errors in succumbing to the demands of the Biden-Harris administration, commitment to reinstating free speech on its platforms, and revision of its policies. However, Alphabet has not publicly renounced the administration's censorship initiatives. In response to a comment request, Google spokesperson Jose Castañeda informed The Verge that they would continue to demonstrate to the committee their independent enforcement of policies, underscored by their dedication to fostering free expression.
